2010 Auburn-decommit Heath Houston Commits to VCU!

With the news of Kasey Wilson's decommitment 2 weeks ago, the VCU staff got to working hard to replace him. The hard work paid off. With just a 2 week turnaround VCU got great news yesterday when 6'8, 240 pound PF Heath Houston gave his commitment to Shaka Smart and the VCU coaching staff. Houston was a part of Auburn's #6 rated national class for 2010 (#2 in the SEC behind Kentucky) and signed with Jeff Lebo in the fall over offers from Cincinnati, Winthrop, and Tulane. With Jeff Lebo's firing this spring, Houston decommitted after Tony Barbee took the reins at Auburn. He was named 2nd team All-State in Georgia at the 4A classification. Interestingly enough we are trading a Georgia player (Issiah Grayson) for another one hailing from the same state. Houston ultimately chose the Rams over ECU where Jeff Lebo (the coach he signed with at Auburn) was really after him to become a Pirate. Clemson out of the ACC and fellow CAA-member Drexel were battling for Houston's services as well. Houston is a 2010 commit who will join Juvonte Reddic, Reco McCarter, Toby Veal, Rob Brandenberg, and DJ Haley. The Fab Five have now become the Super Six.

Houston has a college-ready body at 6'8, 240 pounds and is a face-up 4 who is pretty skilled and has a nice jumper out to 20 feet. He's yet another lefty who will be a great on-the-ball defender in the press for the Rams. He is not highly-rated by recruiting services (83 ESPN grade, Scout 2 star, unranked by Rivals), but his offers do speak for themselves. He has a high-major body and has shown flashes of high-major ability during his high school career. While he may not be an impact player in the SEC, he is more than good enough at the CAA level. He will be a steady 4-year player for the Rams who won't be flashy, but will get the job done. He is also a fairly good athlete (though not as explosive as Toby Veal) who will give us even more frontcourt depth with Jamie Skeen, Toby Veal, Juvonte Reddic, and DJ Haley.

VCU's Coaching Staff is recruiting at a very high level with well-regarded players and building for a bright future. Just when we thought the 2010 class couldn't get any better, we get a SEC decommit to cap off the class! Awesome stuff from Shaka and crew! WCHS 8 does a feature on Pierria' Henry

Local Charleston ABC-affiliate WCHS did a video feature on Pierria' Henry outlining his recruitment and his late-season injury that almost cost him his life. They mention that if he had waited 1 more hour to get to the hospital, he likely would have died. He has 45 staples on the outside of his thigh and 50 stitches on the inside, the result of the 5 surgeries on his leg to treat the clot in his thigh. Henry talks about how the injury gave him a new appreciation for life as well as those close to him.

The feature said Henry received 11 scholarship offers, including in-state schools Marshall and West Virginia. He explains his reasoning for committing to VCU and cited the coaching staff's support and concern throughout his ordeal as being what sealed the deal for him. Vic Herbert (Pierria's basketball coach) said that Pierria' will undoubtedly learn and mature from this experience. There are highlights of him on the basketball court as well as the football field (the reporter also noted that Pierria' would not be able to play football this season as he recovers). It's a great feature and a must-see if you are a Ram fan!

Jordan Laguerre visiting VCU

According to VCU target Jordan Laguerre's twitter, he will be visiting VCU the next couple of days:

Laguerre is a 6'2 scoring guard who is rated the #9 player in all of New England by the New England Recruiting Report. He was originally a 2010 recruit but has since reclassified to 2011. He is rated an 89 by ESPN (was a 90 earlier this summer), a Scout.com 2-star recruit , and unrated on Rivals.

ESPNU announces Kasey Wilson decommitting from VCU

Senior-to-be power forward Kasey Wilson has decided to open up his recruitment and is no longer committed to Virginia Commonweatlh, his AAU coach Conrad Foss has confirmed to ESPN.com.

Wilson originally chose the Rams in February over Ohio and also had interest from Georgia, Auburn, Syracuse, Oklahoma State and others.

Shooting guard Pierria Henry is the lone 2011 recruit for VCU.

We regret to see this happen, but wish luck to Kasey in his future endeavors. VCU will not be re-recruiting him.

PrepsHoopsAssist.com names VCU #5 non-BCS recruiting class in the nation!

PrepsHoopsAssist.com did their Top 25 mid-major/non-BCS recruiting classes for 2010 and VCU's 5 man class made the list at #5 in the nation. The teams in front of VCU were Memphis (top 3 national class), Central Michigan, Detroit (both with top 50 recruits pledging to play for their fathers), and St. Joes. VCU's class was ranked ahead of schools such as Xavier, Dayton, Butler, St. Louis, Western Kentucky, and Florida International (who has been recruiting well under Isiah Thomas). They are the sole CAA team represented in the top 25.

Shaka Smart and the VCU staff are continuing to gain accolades for the 2010 class, let's hope they perform well on the court as well!

Kasey Wilson named to All-Tournament team at the Bob Gibbons TOC

A little while ago the Report covered Kasey's performance at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in North Carolina. Here's a little bit of additional information. Kasey Wilson was named to the 17U All-Tournament team along with teammate Michael Frazier. This placed him in the top 42 players in an event having 64 teams from all over the United States. He was also one of the top scoring leaders at the tournament at the 17U level and tied for 14th overall averaging 20.3 ppg for the tournament. Great job Kasey!

Brian Mull, who runs a blog covering all things UNC Wilmington, wrote up an entry on local prep stars that the Seahawks are recruiting. Freddie Jackson is among those targets and has been tendered an offer from Buzz Peterson and staff. Here's what Mull had to say about Jackson:

Perhaps the most polished player of the three is New Hanover point guard Freddie Jackson, who toured the UNCW campus last month and received a scholarship offer from Peterson, according to his high school coach, Kirk Angel.

Freddie Jackson is a penetrator and passer, and perhaps a VCU lean

Peterson told Jackson – a true distributing point guard who flourishes in the up-tempo, opencourt style – that he could be the cornerstone of a critical 2011 UNCW recruiting class that has six openings.

If the Seahawks don’t land Jackson, they may have to play against him.

He’s being heavily courted by VCU. He and Angel took an unofficial visit to the VCU campus recently, where Jackson toured the facilities, played pickup games against the current Rams and met former point guard Eric Maynor, who recently completed his rookie year with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. New Hanover will return to Richmond later this summer for VCU’s team camp.

From the entry, it looks like UNCW has now joined VCU in having an offer to Jackson on the table in addition to interest from Charlotte and East Carolina. VCU certainly has the most to offer in the way of basketball success of the 4 programs. Meeting with a fellow North Carolina point guard in Eric Maynor who went from VCU on to the NBA isn't bad for recruiting either. It will ultimately come down to how comfortable Jackson is with going away from home. All other indicators would point to VCU as the best situation for him.

Larry Sanders NBA Draft Mania Continued...

There is a lot of press on Larry Sanders (and subsequent exposure for VCU) as he is right in the middle of workouts for NBA teams. Here's NBA.com's Video Profile on Larry Sanders for the NBA Draft:

Larry has been all over the continent doing workouts for various NBA teams (Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, and New Jersey Nets among others) and most recently worked out for the Jazz yesterday. He made the UtahJazz.com homepage along with Georgia Tech's Gani Lawal and Kentucky's Patrick Patterson.

After the workout the Salt Lake City media conducted a video interview with Larry that was posted on UtahJazz.com:

While Larry has been slated anywhere from 13 to 28 in the first round, his workout in Toronto on June 3rd seems to have boosted his stock. RaptorsHQ called him the standout of the day:

On the other hand,the stand-out player to me yesterday was Larry Sanders. Many don't know about this kid but like Hickson a few years back, I wouldn't be surprised to see him creep up draft boards and have an immediate impact in the league. He's even longer than I remembered, was all over the court in drills, rebounding the ball, dunking put-backs, and is starting to show a solid face-up game as well, something we touch on in my interview with him below. He's raw, but I'd argue more polished than Udoh or Orton, and has more upside actually than Aldrich. He's also one of the funniest and most personable prospects I've ever spoken to over the years, and you can see that in the following interview:

Click on the link to read a pretty lengthy and informative interview that Larry did with RaptorsHQ. He is scheduled to do approximately 13 NBA workouts total leading up to June 24th including one's on the 16th with the Memphis Grizzlies and the 22nd with the Atlanta Hawks.

The Toronto media also did a 4:40 minute video interview with Sanders after the workout in which he carried himself well and seems to have made a good impression on the Raptors staff:

Following the workout the Detroit Free Press wrote up an article on Sanders improving his draft stock and the possibility of the Pistons trading down to get him:

But while the focus is on sure-fire lottery picks Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, Ed Davis, Ekpe Udoh and Cole Aldrich, Dumars said on the night of the draft lottery that the Pistons would have to be mindful of fast-rising prospects -- for the pick and for the possibility of trading down.

One such prospect could be VCU's Larry Sanders.

In a workout with the Raptors last week while matched against Udoh, Aldrich and Daniel Orton, Sanders did far more than hold his own.

Projected to be a power forward, his length should enable him to guard all three frontcourt positions.

With all the buzz and media, VCU is getting a lot of great exposure to a large market of viewers that may not even follow college basketball all that much. It's nice to see Larry doing well and this is not being lost on the recruiting targets the Rams are pursuing. Hopefully Larry and Eric are the first of several VCU players to go to the NBA in the coming seasons ahead.

Kasey Wilson and Florida Elite win the USSSA Florida 17U Tournament Championship...

Kasey particpated as a member of Florida Elite's 17U squad this past weekend at Cocoa Beach for the 17U Florida USSSA tournament. While Florida Elite had already won the AAU state championship earlier this year, the USSSA tournament is another prestigious tournament that has slipped in significance over the years. The level of competition in this tournament was not as competitive as earlier ones and Florida Elite breezed their way to the Championship winning their first game by a 78-64 score and then beating the Brevard Bulls in the final by 30 points, winning 82-52. 2012 guard Michael Frazier was the tournament MVP for Florida Elite. Elite 17U are the 2010 USSSA State Champions! Congratulations to Kasey and Florida Elite!

Kasey Wilson continues to impress on the AAU circuit...this time at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions

Bob Gibbons' Tournament of Champions in North Carolina is one of the premier AAU tournaments of the year drawing AAU teams from all over the United States and Canada. The 17U tournament featured 64 of the top AAU teams around with 16 pool-winners advancing to the 17U national playoffs, while the second-place pool finishers advanced to the 17U select playoffs. Kasey Wilson and his Florida Elite 17U team played in Pool I and were seeded 2nd in their pool which included the #1 New England Playaz, #3 NC Gaters Blue, and #4 Team Power, GA.

Florida Elite's first game was against the #3 seeded NC Gaters Blue the Ravenscroft School's main gym on May 28th at 8:30 in the evening. Florida Elite jumped out to a 46-28 halftime lead and didn't let the lead slip away beating the Gaters by a score of 78-63.

Florida Elite's 2nd game would take place the next day (May 29th) at 11 a.m. against 4th-seeded Team Power hailing from Georgia at Duke University's Card Gym. Florida Elite once again came out on top beating Team Power by a 64-55 score.

Kasey Wilson would show up in the big games and it all started later at 6 p.m. on the 29th against the #1 seed in Pool I, the New England Playaz. The game was played at UNC's Carmichael Gym just down Tobacco Road from Duke. Kasey Wilson and Florida Elite looked to make a statement and turned it up. Kasey Wilson had 15 first-half points as Florida Elite took a 35-24 advantage going into the half. Elite cruised in the second half to a 65-39 victory over the #1 seed in their pool and Kasey finished with 22 points.

With the victory Kasey and Florida Elite advanced to the 17U National Playoffs as one of the 16 pool winners. They would face off against the winner of Pool H (Belmont Shore out of California who was the #1 seed in that pool) back up Tobacco Road at Duke University's Wilson Recreation Center at 10 p.m. that same night. The winner would advance to the final championship day of tournament play at UNC's Dean Smith Center the following day. Belmont Shore proved formidable and were a very tough team matchup for Florida Elite but Kasey put on a show scoring 25 points in a close 5-point loss.

All in all it was a strong showing for Florida Elite and Kasey Wilson continued his strong AAU play. Kasey continues to improve and looks to be a valuable contributor and a key part of VCU's 2011 class. With Pierria' Henry already committed and 2 other guards to join the Rams in the coming weeks, Wilson will be the sole forward in the 2011 class, joining 2010 forwards Juvonte Reddic, Darrell Haley, and Reco McCarter as the future of the VCU frontcourt. Let's hope he continues to play well and bring that momentum into VCU in 2011!

ESPN lists VCU among the nation's top non-BCS classes!

Michael LaPlante at ESPN wrote up an article on the top non-BCS classes in the country today and VCU made the list and was the sole CAA representative. George Mason also received an honorable mention with two solid recruits of their own (credit to vcu_dan on the VCURamNation boards for the find). LaPlante gave VCU a "B" for the recruiting class overall placing it in the 5-10 range (since schools outside the top 25 with the same grade were placed alphabetically). Here's what he had to say about VCU's five man class:

In recent years, VCU has had an outstanding run with three different coaches and coach Shaka Smart has kept the talent level flowing with the addition of another strong recruiting class. Juvonte Reddic (Winson-Salem, N.C./Quality Education Academy) could be a major steal as he develops in the low post, while Reco McCarter (Goldsboro, N.C./Wayne Country Day) gives Smart a smooth, versatile scoring wing that should help continue the successful trend at VCU.

The Rams continue to gain accolades as the CAA's best recruiting class for 2010 and recruiting analysts seem to agree that Juvonte Reddic and Reco McCarter are the headliners of the class, reflecting the opinion of Ram fans in the Recruiting Report poll. With 2011 already having gotten off to a good start with Kasey Wilson (ESPN 91, Rivals 3 star) and Pierria' Henry (ESPN 90, Rivals 3-star) having committed already for 2011, the Rams look to continue their great recruiting under Shaka Smart for years to come.

Let's take a break from recruiting to talk LARRY SANDERS DRAFT MANIA!

While VCU is in great shape with the last 2 of their top 3 guard targets (Henry was the first) and we should get a commitment from at least 1 before June 20th, things have otherwise been somewhat quiet as the off season drags on. One nice thing that can keep VCU fans in basketball mode is the media buzz surrounding our very own junior Larry Sanders who has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility to go to the NBA.

He has already had a workout with the Indiana Pacers and most recently participated in the NBA Pre-Draft combine in Chicago. Here are Mr. Sanders' official NBA measurements:

Height: 6'9.25" barefoot, 6'10.5" with shoes
Weight: 222
Wingspan: 7'5.75"
Reach: 9'4"
Body fat %: 4.6%

Here is ESPNU's breakdown of Larry Sanders and some footage of him from the combine. He shows a pretty nice 3-point stroke hitting almost 50% of his shots behind the college line. Of course VCU fans know all about Larry's 3-point shot.

Last week the Indiana Pacers worked out Larry Sanders in what was his first NBA workout leading up to the draft. The Pacers hold the #10 overall pick in the first round of this year's draft. Sanders was the only first-round prospect in a group that also included Sylven Landesberg (UVA), Gani Lawal (Georgia Tech), Mikhail Torrance (Alabama), Dominique Jones (South Florida) and Aubrey Coleman (Houston). Here are the highlights of the May 17th workouts in which Larry Sanders performed pretty well.

After the workouts Pacers.com interviewed Larry Sanders to get his thoughts on his first workout, advice from VCU teammate and OKC Thunder point guard Eric Maynor, his thoughts on how he might fit in with the Pacers, what he wants to show NBA executives during the draft process, and what his expectations of where he'll go in the draft are:

Several NBA fan sites and draft sites have articles out discussing the possibility of Larry joining their teams including the OKC Thunder, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, and Boston Celtics. All of the major mock draft sites have Larry Sanders going in the first round ranging anywhere from 13th to 28th overall. It will be interesting to follow the draft process and we have to thank Larry Sanders for reinforcing VCU as a plausible program for NBA-caliber players. Both Juvonte Reddic and Pierria' Henry have stated that as an important selling point in passing over such programs as Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Maryland (in Reddic's case), and West Virginia, Dayton, Xavier, Arkansas, and Virginia Tech (in Henry's case). Let's hope we'll have more of these players giving us good news in the offseason leading up to the NBA draft. 2 NBA first-rounders in 2 years is pretty darn good for a mid-major program like VCU. Issiah Grayson to transfer...we have another scholarship ladies and gents

Rising sophomore point guard Issiah Grayson is leaving the VCU program and transferring in order to find a better situation for him to get good minutes. He was professional through and through and had a great demeanor on and off the court representing the program and school well. While things didn't work out for him on the court, he was professional about it all the way. I think I can speak for all Ram fans when I say 'Good luck and all the best in your future endeavors!'.

The Rams now have another scholarship and will not be looking to use it on just anybody. The staff has a good head start on 2011 and is in good shape with a number of prospects but will also keep the scholarship open in the event that a suitable mid-year transfer becomes available. Again the Report wishes Issiah 'Iggy' Grayson all the best and a bright future with whichever program he chooses to join.

ESPN's Paul Biancardi gives VCU props on spring signing period recruits!

The Commodores also added good size during this late signing period in centers Juvonte Reddic (Winston-Salem, N.C./Quality Education) and Darrell Haley (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale). Reddic plays with great energy, has great athletic ability and can defend both post positions at 6-9. Haley has an impressive frame (6-10, 230 pounds) with broad shoulders and long arms, but needs to hone his offensive game.

The obvious error in calling us the Commodores aside (especially considering there is a VCU Rams logo right next to the blurb), it's nice press for VCU which was the only CAA school mentioned in the article.

4-star 2011 prospect Shane Larkin has VCU as his leader

A post on the VCURamNation boards by MistaChill tipped Ram fans off to an update on Larkin by Dave Telep at Scout.com. Larkin is a 5'11 guard who hails from the same high school as Mississippi standout Chris Warren.

He has offers from VCU, Clemson (Purnell’s regime), Central Florida, South Florida and George Mason. “It’s still VCU, probably the hardest." Larkin said. “That’s the school I like the most.”

He’s visited Miami and South Florida. Duke, Alabama, UCLA, USC, Harvard, Marquette, Wake Forest, Florida State and Florida remain in touch with him.

Larkin is a Scout.com 3 star (#20 PG), 4-star Rivals.com report (#76 in Rivals 150), and a 91 ESPN grade(#28 PG).

While the summer AAU session should heat up Larkin's recruitment, it is nice to see that we lead for his services right now.

Further thoughts on Pierria' Henry from the RTD and assistant coach Cliff Jackson

Tim Pearell of the Richmond Times-Dispatch got some material that didn't make it into the print article on Henry's commitment to VCU. He put the remaining material on his blog online. Here is the link.

It says that doctors told Henry he could have lost the leg or even died had he waited longer to have surgery. He won't be able to bear weight on the leg for the next 2 months and will be fully recovered in 6 months in time for the beginning of basketball season.

“It did make me appreciate things even more. I look at life differently now. You never know what tomorrow brings. You never know when the last time is you get to speak to anybody. I make sure my last words to everybody are, ‘I love you.’”

Thoughts from South Charleston assistant Cliff Jackson:

“In the long run, I think they’ve gotten themselves a pretty darn good player. The last two years Pierria’ has fiddled with football. He was getting some decent football looks, too. I just wonder how good Perry could be in a year-round, 12-month basketball situation.

“When he gets that individual attention, I just think his offensive skills will just get so much better.”

“He’s such a great defender. [Recruiters] liked his ability to play the point and score a little bit, but they were just amazed at how he defended and his willingness to play hard the whole time.”

“Probably his biggest strength is his competitiveness. He’s a go-getter and refuses to lose.”

“His leadership was very valuable this year. He leads by example. He’s not a very boisterous person. He just pretty much leads by his play and his competitiveness.”

Everything we're hearing seems to reinforce that this kid is a class individual in addition to being a great player. This seems to be a pattern for the types of kids Coach Smart is bringing in whereas Coach Grant would take chances on guys who were not so well-mannered and mature. Guys like DJ Haley (3.8 GPA), Juvonte Reddic (3.5), and Pierria Henry (3.25) seem to be solid in the classroom as well. All nice things to see if you are a VCU fan.

ESPN updates Henry and regrades him as a 90 (#41 SG)

ESPN has updated Henry's profile to reflect his commitment, but also downgraded him to a 90(#41 SG) from a 92(#29 SG). I got to catch a screenshot of the 2011 commit list for posterity since he was the highest-rated ESPN guy to commit to VCU since ESPN started grading.

Nonetheless, his updated grade is still very impressive and Shaka and staff are completely ripping it up on the trail. The fact that he has brought two 90+ recruits into the fold for 2011 before any other team in the conference even got 1 is a pretty impressive feat. Here's what ESPN had to say regarding Henry's commitment:

Charleston, W.Va., guard Pierria Henry has given Virginia Commonwealth head coach Shaka Smart and his staff a verbal commitment, according to sources close to the situation.

The 6-foot-3 Henry had offers from Akron and Marshall and was garnering interest from West Virginia and Xavier before deciding on the Rams.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator John Stovall describes Henry as a "combo guard who is comfortable playing either spot."

"Pierria's got a good basketball I.Q. so he has no problem running a team. He is quick and strong enough to get in the lane and finish or dish it to a teammate and he's also a solid shooter out to 20 feet."

"Pierria was injured (thigh contusion) early on in the spring and may not play the rest of the travel circuit but overall this is an excellent get for the Rams," Stovall added. "He can play in almost any style but is at his best in an up-and-down system."

He joins Florida product Kasey Wilson in VCU's 2011 recruiting class.

In the day since Henry's commitment was announced, there have been a number of changes. Both Rivals and Scout updated their profiles to reflect his commitment with the former also rating him a 3-star recruit. He joins Kasey Wilson as a 3-star. The last 7 commitments to VCU have been Rivals 3-star recruits (from the classes of 2010 and 2011). There has also been a good amount of press on the event that outlines a lot of the background around Henry's commitment. I'll give a synopsis on the highlights of the material.

-Henry visited VCU in February with his grandfather Jerry Stephens. His grandfather was always partial to VCU who loved the staff, atmosphere, and program. He always asked when they would go back. Mr. Stephens passed away this month on May 3rd.

-Henry suffered a thigh contusion at the Pitt JamFest AAU event and had to go to a hospital in Pittsburgh for emergency surgery, the first staff to call him while in the Hospital was VCU.

-Henry's coach was somewhat surprised but did not question or sway his players decision but did state that he had offers from ACC, SEC, and Big East schools so VCU's staff obviously did something right.

-When asked Henry said West Virginia, Xavier, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, and Dayton had offered him.

-Henry committed to VCU because of the support his grandfather gave. He feels the coaching staff will be father-figures to him, something he lacked growing up after his father left when he was a small child. He also cited the ability to get to the NBA from VCU as a selling point.

-Henry has a 3.25 GPA and has qualified academically.

-His coach Vic Herbert says he's the premier defender in the state and takes pride in his commitment to defense and rebounding, something that will allow him to contribute immediately at the college level.

To go along with awesome news of Pierria Henry's commitment to VCU (a 92 ESPN recruit), the first commit from the 2011 class Kasey Wilson has been bumped up from an 89 to a 91 and the #25 PF in the 2011 class as well!

Shaka Smart and staff are just outdoing themselves and if anyone thought 2010 was a great class, 2011 already looks better if ESPN is any indication! Congrats to Kasey Wilson!

Pierria Henry Commits to VCU!

The Rams have secured a HUGE commitment from 6’4, 186 pound combo guard Pierria Henry (incorrectly listed as Perry Henry on several sites) out of South Charleston high school in West Virginia. He is a Big East level player who sported a number of Division 1 offers including West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Xavier among others. ESPN gives Henry at a 92 grade which would make him the highest-ranked recruit according to that service that VCU has garnered a commitment from since ESPN started their recruiting service. He was a two-sport standout for the Black Eagles starring at wide receiver and defensive back in football. Henry led them to 2 straight state championships in the sport and was named MVP in the state championship game this year . He’s no slouch on the basketball court either, scoring his 1000th point as a junior on February 11th. He was named Mountain State Athletic co-Player of the Year (with Wake Forest commit Chase Fischer) and 1st team All-State West Virginia. He was recently named MVP of the All-Ohio Nike Cup AAU tournament, leading his WV Wildcats 17U team to the title with 21 point, 9 rebound game in the final. Henry can do it all averaging 16.2 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, and 5 steals per game this past season.

What makes his achievements in both sports all the more impressive is the fact that he comes from a tough family situation and despite his hardships has thrived. His father left him and his 4 siblings when he was just a child, leaving his mother working 2 jobs to keep the household afloat. His brother is sitting in a jail cell for allegedly shooting a man and Henry has had to grow up quickly and become the man of the house for his sisters. Things got so bad at home that his mother finally relented and let him go live with his girlfriend’s family to get him out of the negative environment surrounding his home. Without the money to pay for college, Henry’s flair for the athletic opened new doors towards completing a college education. The hardship of his life has given him toughness, heart, and desire that can’t be learned on the basketball court or the turf. He is one the hardest working players on the football field and was the leading rebounder on his team as a 6’4 sophomore guard. Henry’s hard work is not just limited to the athletic arena, as he also sports a GPA above 3.0 as well. While he’s a great player on the court, Henry looks to be an even more remarkable individual off of it.

An unfortunate injury during the AAU season sidelined Henry as he developed a blood clot in his right leg after being kneed in the thigh at the Pittsburgh JamFest AAU tournament at the University of Pittsburgh. It was the second injury after developing a deep thigh bruise in the Nike Cup tournament in Columbus the week before. The blood clot required immediate emergency surgery and so he underwent a number of surgeries to take care of it. While he is expected to make a full recovery, the timetable for recovery from such an event is anywhere from 3-6 months. This means that Henry will be unable to play in both AAU tournaments this summer and football in the fall. While Henry is a division 1 football prospect, he had not received any firm offers although many coaches were looking at him at the wide receiver position. With his recovery time impeding him from playing football this fall, basketball is the way to go for Henry.

Is anyone else thinking Jesse Pellot-Rosa here? Henry has all the makings of a tough, hard-nosed guard who can put up points in a hurry but also battle among the trees in the post to grab valuable rebounds. With offers from VCU, West Virginia, Xavier, Virginia Tech, Akron, Ohio, Cleveland State, and Delaware, Henry has been recruited by a wide variety of schools and ended up choosing the Rams. His ultimate goal is to go to the NBA in order to provide for the family and mother that have worked so hard their whole lives to get by: "That's why I keep working hard every day to get to the pros. That's my main thing; get my mom a nice home and a car that will work. Let her sit down and relax and enjoy life. Right now, she can't do that. She's been working ever since I can remember." Sound like a good kid to you? South Charleston AD Jason Redman agrees: "For him to go through the things that he's gone through and be the quality kid that he is ... Let's put it this way: I have a two-month old son, and I hope he grows up to be that kind of quality person." While it sounds like Shaka Smart and the rest of the VCU coaching staff have picked up a heck of a basketball player, it also looks like they’ve picked up an even more impressive individual in the process.

Kasey Wilson and Florida Elite 17U win AAU State Tournament!

6'7 2011 verbal commit Kasey Wilson is keeping up the strong play in AAU as he and Florida Elite won the State AAU tournament at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida today. They breezed through pool play yesterday, blowing out opponents to the tune of 66-30, 68-39, and 55-38. Today the team faced stiffer competition but beat each opponent they faced to get to the finals and Team Stat led by Austin Rivers (the Scout.com #1 SG prospect in the class of 2011), Darius Perkins, Trevor Lacey and a number of other talented players. Austin Rivers didn't play in the final and Florida Elite killed Team Stat in the final to take the State AAU Tournament championship at the 17U level. Wilson continued to impress and had a great weekend!

6'2 combo guard Michael Neal visits VCU today

6'2, 175-pound Michael Neal (Oak Ridge Military Academy) has been on the Ram staffs' radar for some time now. The staff has evaluated him as a mid to high-major caliber player that has flown under the radar for the most part, largely due to a wrist injury suffered in the second game of the season. He was a part of Northern Guilford's 3-A North Carolina State Championship team in 2009. He then followed Coach Stan Kowalewski along with several Northern Guilford players to Oak Ridge Military Academy. He was the starting point guard before his unfortunate wrist injury very early this season and as a result many schools were unaware of him. Oak Ridge is a pretty good team with players like Jay Canty (Xavier), Jacob Lawson (high major prospect), and Chris McLain (Southern California-football). While the injury was unfortunate for Neal, it played to VCU's advantage as they had identified his potential early on. They parlayed their aggressive recruitment of Michael into a visit to VCU today. Neal had a great visit today and the Rams look to be in great shape with Neal now. While some other CAA schools had started to inquire about him, the only programs likely beating out VCU for Neal would be a high major school at this point just because of how much longer we've been recruiting him than everyone else.

Neal is a good-looking guard who plays well above the rim and has impressive athleticism and vertical for his size. While he has been underrated by a number of services, his potential is quite high and is largely due to under-exposure due to transferring schools and his subsequent wrist injury. For now, it looks like Neal would be a great fit for the Rams and Neal seems to agree. The staff is working hard at keeping up the momentum from the strong 2010 class going into 2011!

Freddie Jackson- 2011 6'3 PG VCU prospect

Freddie Jackson is an under the radar 6'3 point guard whose first offer is from VCU. Dave Telep just saw him recently at the North Carolina Eastern Regionals playing against another Ram target in Chris Wilson (Terry Sanford)and raved about his game. He went from unranked and unknown to a 3-star Scout recruit. Jackson scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists in his matchup with Wilson. In his junior season, Jackson has averaged 14.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.7 assists a game. He was subsequently invited Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge where he went against some of the best players in North Carolina and acquited himself very well. This is a guy that VCU would love to have and would be a great fit. 6'3 point guards from North Carolina have been good to VCU lately.

VCU has really been setting up camp in North Carolina and is making it a focus area for recruiting. With the investment of time and effort into that region, VCU has a foothold with a lot of North Carolina prospects which is exciting as the basketball talent (especially in eastern North Carolina) is grossly underrated. Here's what Dave Telep had to say about Jackson upon seeing him for the first-time at the regionals.

“The best thing about Freddie Jackson is that he is a late bloomer,” Telep said. “He has developed at his own rate without any outside influences."

“As a basketball player, I really like his feel for the game, and the best thing he does is his mid-range game and his ability to pass the basketball. I was so happy he came up to the Carolina Challenge and got to play against the best guys in our state, see what it was like and show how good of a player he is.”

It's pretty incredible that the VCU staff has been able to lock down on under-recruited prospects and get on them early. The VCU coaching staff beat both Telep and the UNCW coaching staff under Benny Moss (both in their home states mind you) in finding out about Jackson. While the new coaching staff at UNCW is trying to get in with him now, VCU has been on him for much longer and is tough to beat. The staff has made North Carolina a priority and it shows. Dave Telep definitely knows to pay more attention to him now. He missed on Eric Maynor and VCU snagged him, he may not have missed on Jackson, but we might get him anyway thanks to some strong work by the excellent coaching staff at VCU.

“Talking with his high school coach, Freddie really started to accept a bigger role as the year went on and really started to grow into the role of being the best player on the team,” Telep said.

“The other thing is location. I remember driving home from the East Regional thanking God that I saw Freddie Jackson that day and really kicking myself that I didn't know much about him before then.”

Don't worry Dave, you're not alone there.

Daily News Record article on VCU's top CAA recruiting class

Mark Selig over at the Daily News Record put a subscription article on VCU's class being the CAA's best. The DNR is based out of Harrisonburg, VA. While the article is subscription only, it does give a little teaser as to the contents of the article.

Last offseason, Virginia Commonwealth lost point guard Eric Maynor, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, as well as head coach Anthony Grant. This offseason, all-league player Larry Sanders announced he would declare for the NBA draft. Could these costly departures signify a fleeting success for VCU - the winningest CAA men's basketball team for the past four seasons? Hardly.

It's nice to see other publications start to recognize the special class VCU has put together for 2010.

Many had noted on the VCURamNation boards that Darrell Haley had not been reflected as committed to the Rams on Rivals and had no stars, while Veal and Brandenberg's profiles reflected having committed to VCU but were similarly unranked. Well Jerry Meyers updated their profiles and ALL of the 2010 class are 3-star recruits. That's right folks Rob Brandenberg, Reco McCarter, Toby Veal, Darrell Haley, and Juvonte Reddic are all Rivals 3-star recruits! This only serves to reinforce the fact that Coach Shaka Smart is a stud on the recruiting trail. The future is bright indeed!

Juvonte Reddic's Scout.com profile was updated and he is now a 3-star recruit and the #35 Center in the nation.

Reco McCarter's Scout.com profile was also updated and he took a bit of a hit, dropping from the #38 SF to the #50 SF but still a 3-star recruit. It's the first time since 2007 that VCU has signed 2 consensus 3-star recruits (Scout/Rivals) when Joey Rodriguez and Ed Nixon signed on to play for the Rams. DJ Haley and Rob Brandenberg remain unranked and Toby Veal is a 2-star (he was a 3-star recruit out of high school when he committed to Colorado).

*EDIT*: After corresponding with Scout.com National Director Dave Telep, he explained that Brandenberg and Haley are not unranked but that there's a bug in their system for guys who are not number ranked. Haley and Brandenberg are 2-star guys according to Telep and their profiles will reflect that shortly.

Former Ram Target Davante Gardner commits to Marquette

Davante Gardner is a 6'8 senior out of King's Fork in the 757 (the same school where Jaquon Parker hails from, if you remember he committed to ODU before reneging on his commitment to play at Cincinnati). Gardner is following in Parker's footsteps and heading to the Big East to play for another former C-USA member in Marquette. There was definite recruiting interest from VCU this past season and Gardner was seen at VCU games at the Stu this past season as well. The big man was named 1st-team All-Tidewater as well as 1st-team All State at the end of the season. It is unknown exactly how serious Gardner was about VCU and vice versa, but VCU had already filled out all the spots for the 2010 class well in advance of Gardner's decision.

Interview with VCU signee Darrell 'DJ' Haley

With 6'11 big man Larry Sanders leaving for the NBA draft and seniors TJ Gwynn and Kirill Pischalnikov graduating and moving on (as well as the subsequent dismissal of rising junior Terrance Saintil), the Ram frontcourt was suddenly very thin with only rising senior Jamie Skeen and walk-on redshirt sophomore David Hinton returning in the frontcourt next year. The staff had to address the gaps in the frontcourt and came up big with the signings of some highly-touted big men, including an intriguing 7-footer out of California in Darrell 'DJ' Haley. Haley's father Darrell Sr. played in the PAC-10 for California in the early 80's and DJ has picked up a lot from his dad. He runs the floor extremely well for his size and has soft hands, finishing around the basket but also possessing a nice perimeter stroke as well.

Scout.com ranked Haley as the #8 Center on the West Coast and ESPN.com's Joel Francisco named Haley as one of the top sleepers out west:

One of the top sleepers out West is 6-9 senior Darrell Haley (Palmdale, Calif.). He has a terrific lengthy frame and good hands. He is a tad mechanical and is still very raw, but the upside is there.

During his visit, Haley measured out just shy of 7 feet at 6'11 3/4". He will bring much needed size and athleticism to the frontcourt as well as a tireless work ethic. Along with Juvonte Reddic, Haley makes up one of the bigger and more athletic frontcourt recruiting classes at VCU in a while. DJ was gracious enough to spend some time to do an interview with the Report:

RRR: On behalf of the Ram Nation I’d like to express our excitement at your decision to be a part of the future of VCU basketball.

RRR: You were pursued by many schools from many different levels, what made VCU the right fit for you in your mind?

DJ: VCU is the right fit for me because I felt like I was at home as soon as I stepped on campus. The team was great, the campus was welcoming, and the coaching staff is amazing. I feel that I can become the best person I can possibly be on and off the court at VCU.

RRR: Over the course of your recruitment, which schools did you have offers from?

DJ: I had offers from Iowa State, Wyoming, Drake, VCU(of course lol), and had interest from USC, Colorado, Cornell, and Princeton.

RRR: When you ultimately chose to commit to VCU, which schools did you have offers from or have visits scheduled for?

DJ: When I committed to VCU, I already had it narrowed down to them and Drake. I visited VCU and then went to visit Drake a week after. I committed the day after I got back from Iowa.

RRR: Which NBA or college player would you say your game most resembles and why?

DJ: I would have to say Pau Gasol. I like to get to the bucket but also have some finesse to my game.

RRR: What do you think your greatest strength as a player is?

DJ: I think my greatest strength is my defense. People say I move pretty well for my height, and I am pretty good at staying on the ground and contesting shots.

RRR: What role do you see yourself playing at VCU next year?

DJ: I'll play wherever the coaches and my team needs me. I'm all about teamwork.

RRR: There was a lot of buzz around campus when you came to visit and the staff made it clear they really wanted you at VCU. What did you do while on your visit in Richmond?

DJ: Basically, they showed me the city and the campus. I really enjoyed going to the Music and Engineering departments as well as seeing the game. I met some pretty important people and hung out with the team. Oh and we had some delicious food. I might have gained some weight on the trip haha.

RRR: California is a long way from Virginia! When did you start hearing from the VCU staff about playing at VCU and who was the primary person in your recruitment?

DJ: Well, I started hearing from VCU from Coach Wade. He had been recruiting me back when he was at Harvard and gave me a ring one day when he was already at VCU. That's when it started.

RRR: What did you think of the fans and atmosphere at the Siegel Center when you visited for the Akron game? Did you hear your name chanted by the fans? (they planned that one in advance)

DJ: The fans are too awesome. I also enjoyed the band. They both ROCKED! The atmosphere of the game felt more intense than the UCLA vs. USC game I went to. And everybody was telling me that the fans were not as crazy as they usually are that game. I actually did not hear the chant coming from them. I did not find out until after the game. I was really into the game haha.

RRR: Your success off the court and in the classroom has been well-publicized as well. Rumor has it you're interested in working for NASA one day?

DJ: Haha. Well I try to excel on and off the court. NASA is definitely where I want to be. I have a fascination with technology especially with a focus on the aerospace/aeronautical side of things. My goals are actually to help develop new ways and strategies for space travel as well as help develop new ways of living from a technological perspective.

RRR: Anything else you wanna say to Ram fans?

DJ: I am looking forward to finally getting on campus!!! I will strive to be the best player I can possibly be as well as the best person. GO RAMS!!!

Update on 2011 Verbal Commit Kasey Wilson

6'7 PF Kasey Wilson decided early that he wanted to become a Ram, committing to Shaka Smart and VCU early in the spring. He visited VCU February 6th and watched the ODU game in front of a packed, sellout crowd of 7,500. He finished the year off strong for the North Port High Bobcats and was named the team MVP for the 2009-2010 year. He also set a school record for most points in a game this season when he dropped 36 points in one contest. He picked the Rams ultimately over Ohio University and Head Coach John Groce, a former Ohio State assistant who has shown himself to be a shrewd evaluator of talent (his team, ironically also the Bobcats, knocked off the 4th-seeded Georgetown Hoyas in the NCAA tournament this year). While Kasey Wilson originally hails from Columbus, Ohio (along with 2010 commit Rob Brandenberg), he ultimately decided VCU was where his heart is, and lucky for us, because he is one heck of a player!

With the high school season over, AAU season began and Wilson led his Florida Elite 17U team to the AAU Disney Easter Classic at the Disney Wide World of Sports Milkhouse and Jostens' Center from April 2nd-4th. 12 courts at one location with non-stop basketball featuring some of the top teams in the country. The Florida Elite 17U played in the Red Division and won the title despite finishing 2nd in their pool where they took out the Jacksonville Lee Bulls (the former AAU team of current Ram Ed Nixon).

According to Florida Hoops, Wilson and 2012 guard Michael Frazier led the way for the Elite. Here's what they had this to say about Wilson's performance:
Wilson, a 6’7 forward from North Port (FL) HS and a Virginia Commonwealth commit is a player we thought would eventually move to the wing. However, he is very athletic and plays so well against bigger guys inside that it may not be necessary. Wilson surprises with his ability to get off the floor quickly and block shots, catch lobs for dunks in half-court sets, and throw down violent dunks on the break. He displays solid fundamentals in the half-court and rarely makes mistakes with the ball.

Next up was the Bill Hensley Memorial Run 'N Slam taking place this weekend, a tourney having one of the longest days of the year as far as AAU is concerned. Yesterday, 14 consecutive hours of games were played at the Spiece Fieldhoue in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This time Michael Frazier (2012) made the most noise for Florida Elite, but Wilson also played well. Florida Elite 17U won their first 5 games on Friday and Saturday including a 58-56 overtime nail-biter to get the 17U team to the Elite 8 this morning. Wilson and Florida Elite battled hard in the 9:30 game this morning, but came up 2 points short of advancing to the Final Four. Despite the loss, Florida Elite played well and Kasey Wilson continues to give Ram fans reasons to be excited about the 2011 class. Wilson is quite the pickup for Shaka Smart and the VCU staff, although that seems to be par for the course if the last several months have been any indication. The fall signing period can't get here fast enough!

Interview with VCU signee Reco McCarter

Reco McCarter was the 2nd commitment for Shaka Smart in the 2010 class and is one of the headliners of this year's recruiting class. My write-up during the Fab Five series covered him in detail. McCarter was a Rivals150 prospect for much of his recruitment (128 then 147 during his junior year) and is ESPN's highest ranked CAA recruit with a grade of 91(#32 SF). He boasted offers from a plethora of major-conference schools and according to Shaka Smart had visited Oklahoma and Georgia before ultimately picking VCU. He has been a 1st team 1A selection out of North Carolina the past 2 years running in a division that included John Wall, CJ Leslie, Dezmine Wells, Ian Miller and a bunch of big name players. Reco is peer among them and has Ram fans all over the nation excited to see what he brings to the court next year. He is a 6'7 small forward with NBA range on his 3-pointer and while streaky, he can burn you from the outside or take it to the rack and punish the rim. His dunk on consensus top-15 national prospect and NC State commit CJ Leslie has made him somewhat of an internet sensation garnering over 10,000 views since December. Reco was gracious enough to spend a few moments with the Report to answer a few questions.

RRR: On behalf of the Ram Nation I’d like to express our excitement at your decision to be a part of the future of VCU basketball.

RECO: The same ones I narrowed it down to Georgia, Oklahoma, and VCU.

RRR: Which NBA or college player would you say your game most resembles and why?

RECO: I'm me....I don't think there is really no one my game resembles cause I just flat out PLAY!

RECO: My quickness and my ability to make plays on the offensive and defensive end! Like I said I just flat out PLAY!

RRR: North Carolina has been a real hot-bed for bringing out great basketball players. How did competing against guys like CJ Leslie, Rodney Purvis, Brian Richardson, Jeremy Jeffers, John Wall etc. help prepare you for the next level in college?

RECO: Playing against those guys I developed the attitude that I have to play hard night in and night out!

RRR: When did you start hearing from the VCU staff about playing at VCU and who was the primary person in your recruitment?

RECO: The beginning of summer '09...Coach Smart was my primary recruiter! That's how I knew that VCU was serious about getting me there!

RRR: You wore 32 in high school and Brandon Rozzell currently sports 32 for VCU. What number do you think you’ll wear at VCU?

RECO: I chose to wear number 25!

RRR: You attended the last couple of VCU games at the Siegel Center during the CBI. What did you think of the atmosphere and fans at VCU?

RECO: I love it...I can't wait to get the crowd pumped up next year!

RRR: Anything you want to say to VCU fans?

RECO: I can't wait to meet all you guys personally and VCU fans will be very excited about the fab five coming in next year! We're looking to win and bring MORE excitment!

On his future: "I wanna go to college all 4 years so I can just get a degree, just in case I don't make it to the league. So I'm gonna fall back on it, but my goal is to do well in college and later on be drafted into the NBA."

The feature also mentioned that all 3 players including Juvonte worked hard in the classroom and have GPA's over 3.0.

Interview with VCU signee Rob Brandenberg

Earlier in my review of VCU's Fab Five, I did a fairly comprehensive write-up of Ohio native and VCU 2010 commit Rob Brandenberg. He is a standout guard from Columbus, Ohio and was the first commit in the class of 2010 for Coach Shaka Smart and the VCU coaching staff. It's only fitting that he should then be the first guy interviewed by the Report as well. Rob was gracious enough to spare some moments to talk to me about his decision to come to VCU as well as a little bit about himself as a basketball player.

RRR: On behalf of the Ram Nation I’d like to express our excitement at your decision to be a part of the future of VCU basketball.

RRR: You were pursued by many schools from many different levels, what made VCU the right fit for you in your mind?

ROB: Well VCU's playing style and the coaching staff were the two main reasons why I chose VCU. I feel I can be very successful and I feel that VCU will get the best out of my game.

RRR: Over the course of your recruitment, which schools did you have offers from?

ROB: I had offers from Wright State, Akron, Ohio, Miami(Ohio), Marshall, Western Carolina, App St, Nevada, Butler, VCU, and Loyola of Chicago.

RRR: When you ultimately chose to commit to VCU, which schools did you have offers from or have visits scheduled for?

ROB: I had no officials set up but earlier in the month I went to Ohio, and Wright St. on unofficials.

RRR: Which NBA or college player would you say your game most resembles and why?

ROB: I think I am a 6'2 Kevin Durant...We both play very smooth and can play off the dribble or shoot over a defender.

RRR: What do you think your greatest strength as a player is?

ROB: I think my athletic ability with the ball. I use my athletic ability to jump and shoot over defenders. I use my speed to blow past defenders and I can flush on defenders in the half court or the fast break.

RRR: What role do you see yourself playing at VCU next year?

ROB: I see myself backing up Joey or Rozzell at the 1 or the 2 and being a player off the bench with instant offense and alot of energy on defense.

RRR: Ohio has a lot of D1 basketball talent with guys like Jared Sullinger, JD Weatherspoon, Geron Johnson, Jordan Sibert, Aaron Kraft etc. Rivals ranked you as the #11 player in all of Ohio. How did playing in the Ohio Capital Conference and the States after that prepare you for the college level?

ROB: The teams in the OCC are very defensive minded and I seen all types of defenses so it just prepares me just in case I see those types of defenses in college.

RRR: When did you start hearing from the VCU staff about playing at VCU and who was the primary person in your recruitment?

ROB: I started to hear stuff from VCU in April of 2009 from coach Getter, so him and Rhoades were the primary recruiters.

RRR: You helped lead your high school team Gahanna Lincoln to a big upset of the #1 team in the country in Columbus Northland. Nobody was giving you guys any respect. How did it feel to knock them off?

ROB: It felt incredible. To beat the number one team in the nation is something I can take with me for the rest of my life. Unfortunately we did not win states but I will use that loss to fuel the fire at VCU.

RRR: Any chance Stevie Taylor wants to join you at VCU? ;)

ROB: Stevie is my boy and he is a great player, but he's likely to stay in Ohio or the Midwest.

RRR: Anything else you wanna say to Ram fans?

ROB: Expect big things from us this year! We are going to build off Coach Smart's successful rookie year and do some great things!

RRR: Thanks so much for your time Rob and we can’t wait to see you take the court for VCU!

Reddic finishes just outside the Rivals150...at 151 (per Jerry Meyers at Rivals)

In Rivals' highly complimentary write-up on Juvonte Reddic after committing to VCU, Brian Snow of Rivals.com said this:

On the strength of his senior year, Reddic will earn definite consideration for a Rivals150 ranking when they are updated after the season.

Well, today the Rivals put out their final Rivals150 for the class of 2010...and Reddic was not on it, although his teammates Stargell Love and Aaron Bowen cracked the list. I emailed Jerry Meyer at Rivals.com in his recruiting mailbag to ask what happened with Juvonte in light of Snow's comments. His reply:

"Literally 151 and I’m not being sarcastic"

Close but no cigar. While it is somewhat disappointing this still puts him as the highest-rated CAA recruit in the class of 2010 by Rivals.com. He has been upgraded to a 3-star recruit from unranked however. This makes him the second rivals 3-star after Reco McCarter in the class.

2011 Prospect- 6'7 SF Aaron Rountree

6'7 Rountree is an intriguing prospect that has great size at 6'7 to go along with a nice mid-range game. He is not a polished product but averaged 10.1 points and 8.8 rebounds for Bedingfield High out of North Carolina. He was invited to Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge as one of the top underclassmen in the state. VCU has targeted North Carolina as of late with Reco McCarter and Juvonte Reddic having signed from the 2010 class and Rountree,Travion Leonard, Chris Wilson, Anthony Stitt, Keynan Pittman, and Freddie Jackson among others in the 2011 class. He already visited VCU on March 19th and visited UVA the month before. In a recent workout at his high school, coaches from VCU, UVA, NC State, and Elon were present to evaluate his game. Although he's still a work-in-process, Rountree has a nice all-around game and does many things well. He will be a player to watch for the Rams in the 2011 class.

Rivals profile: unranked, interest from VCU, Virginia, NC State, and Elon.

Scout profile: 2 star

The 6'7, 190 pound wing has a pretty smooth shooting touch and nice range out to the 3-point line. This video clip shows off his nice touch from the perimeter. His highlights begin at 0:28.

Despite it being early in the process ACC-members Virginia and NC State have jumped in on him early. He visited UVA in February along with 2012 phenom Montrezl Harrell who also sports a VCU offer but will almost certainly go higher. The VCU staff brought him in for a visit on March 19th where he toured the campus and practice facilities.

While it's still early in Rountree's recruitment and there is stiff competition from ACC schools, the coaching staff has shown a penchant for identifying under-the-radar players before they blow up. With Kasey Wilson already committed to the Rams and a host of impressive players considering VCU from the 2011 class, there is much to be excited about in the year ahead when it comes to Ram recruiting!

Dave Telep gives high praise, calls 2010 VCU class 'talk of the league'

In an article from the Commonwealth Times (a VCU student-run paper), columnist Adam Stern interviews Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep. Telep has very high praise for Shaka Smart's first recruiting class and even goes as far as to say that 'it's going to wind up being the talk of the league.' “VCU’s primary concern (going into this year’s recruiting) was getting some bodies for their front court and I don’t know if it could have worked out any better for them. Long, rangy guys that fit in with the style they play, it’s perfect.”

Needless to say, Telep is highly impressed with VCU's 2010 class. There is much for Ram fans to be excited about. The best part? He didn't even mention the guy he rates the highest and headlines the class in Reco McCarter. The future looks bright ladies and gentlemen.

VCU's 'Fab Five': DB's take on the 2010 Recruiting Class

During a season of transition following the loss of the greatest player in VCU history in Eric Maynor as well as the loss of one of the hottest young names in college coaching in Anthony Grant, the Rams have managed to put to rebuild with a 25-win season to this point. They will have a chance at two more in the CBI championships approaching next week in Coach Shaka Smart's first season at the helm. While Ram fans were hoping for a repeat NCAA appearance with surefire NBA first-rounder Larry Sanders leading the way, inconsistencies on the road ultimately were the Rams undoing. The Rams faltered with 7 losses in the conference slate after having a combined 9 over the last 3 seasons prior to this one.

32-year old VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart has gone 25-9 with a trip to the CBI finals in his first year.

While there is some cause for disappointment, the Rams are looking at the CBI as an opportunity to grow as a team and gain experience for freshman such as Darius Theus and Troy Daniels, as well as opportunities for players like Jamie Skeen who will be expected to step up in the absence of Larry Sanders next year. With Larry Sanders leaving early for the NBA, another year of adjustment is only to be expected, especially on the defensive end where Larry was a defensive stalwart (not to mention 2-time Defensive POY). However there is cause for optimism with strong senior leadership and a stellar recruiting class for first-year Rams’ coach Shaka Smart. Here is my breakdown of Smart's impressive recruiting haul and VCU’s version of Michigan’s ‘Fab Five’ (minus the violations of course). Reco McCarter headlines VCU’s 2010 class and signed his LOI with VCU in the fall. He is the #9 player out of the state of North Carolina in what is touted as one of the deepest NC classes in a long time. During his recruitment he made it clear that Wake Forest was his #1 choice and that he would commit immediately if offered. Reco waited despite offers from Virginia Tech, Clemson, NC State from the ACC and Georgia out of the SEC. The offer never came and Shaka Smart was able to nab a commitment from the ultra-quick and athletic small forward from Goldsboro, NC. Here’s a highlight video from OneEntertainmentHoops.com showing off a little bit of Reco’s game, including a nasty slam over top-15 national recruit and Kentucky target C.J. Leslie:

Bob Gibbons, who is one of the top talent evaluators in high school basketball, has high praise for Reco and named the most talented overall prospect along with Patric Young (Florida commit) at the 14th Annual Bob Gibbons Fall Evaluation Clinic at Wake Forest University where over 200 young prospects showed up. He also attended the Wake Forest Elite Camp.

“ McCarter is, unquestionably, one of the top 2010 prospects in the talent-rich state of North Carolina. He is blessed with exceptional athletic abilities, including a terrific vertical jump, lightning speed and quickness, the hands of a magician, and superb reflexes. McCarter can explode to the hoop or pull-up and shoot his soft left-handed jumper. He has good ball-handling skills and is an effective passer. He still needs to focus on his 3-point shooting consistency, and becoming stronger. He always plays with high intensity, desire, and confidence, and has a great work ethic. Description:

The potential for Reco McCarter is limitless and his ceiling is sky high. He is 6'7 and runs the fast break like he is a point guard. In fact the fast break is where McCarter thrives. He has great handles for someone his size and can go coast to coast in the blink of an eye. If this lefty were to be described in one word it would be the word explosive. He loves to attack the rim and is ferocious in his approach. Reco is also a skilled passer on the break and within the half-court offense. He has a well-developed spin move that seems to be his bread and butter. His quickness and length make McCarter a nightmare on defense. Lack of effort is not in his vocabulary: he plays his heart out. Truth be told, this wonderful attribute leads to his weaknesses as well. Reco plays with so much energy that he can at times be out of control and take poor shots. He also needs to work on his perimeter shot. If Reco can harness some of his energy (mentally and physically) and develop his perimeter shot, he will be a nightmare of a mismatch in college. Even though Wake Forest hasn't officially offered Reco yet, most people think that they are a major contender as well. Reco is the #22 SF in the 2010 class and the 128th player overall.

Reco’s most significant weakness at this point is perimeter shooting. Although he has range to the NBA 3-point line, he is not as consistent as he needs to be at this to be effective at the college level. He has committed to improving his perimeter shot and is working on it. When he is on, he is quite deadly and impressive. The key for him is to maintain that level of consistency throughout. For a peak at how good Reco can be from the perimeter, check out this video clip from his 31-point performance against a Greenfield team that featured Brian Richardson (2010 South Carolina commit) and Jeremy Jeffers (2010 Drake commit):

All in all, Reco is a high-flying athletic recruit with a great deal of upside and potential. His skill-set is a great fit for the Rams up-tempo ‘Wreak Havoc’ system. ESPN.com’s Director of Recruiting Paul Biancardi agrees:

"Reco is a long, athltletic and wiry strong lefthanded perimeter player who's blessed with exceptional talent," Biancardi said. "He's smooth and he scores in a variety of ways.

"He excels in an up-tempo transition game where he can go from defense to offense efficiently. He's a finisher with flair in transition."

McCarter's athleticism allows him to do a variety of different things on the court.

"He's a versatile scorer who can make 3's as knock down mid-range jumpshots with ease," added Biancardi. "On his jumper he elevates and see's over his defenders for easy buckets.

"Reco also handles the ball well for a small forward and is capable of putting up big numbers with more physical maturity and coaching."

McCarter also has the defensive skills that the VCU staff covets, according to Biancardi.

"He really shows his versatility on the defensive end of the floor with his athleticism. HIs quickness combined with his outstanding length allows him cover a lot of ground on the court in a fullcourt press situatuion. He can also close out on shooters in the blink of an eye making him very difficult to shoot over.

"He does need to get stronger and be a more consistent plyaer but that should come once he physically matures."

Biancardi cannot help but notice the terrific start Smart and his staff are off to in Richmond.

"The new VCU staff have landed a kid who can really fit into their future plans. He'll thrive and produce in the Rams' fullcourt pressing style of play. McCarter's athleticism and versatility give them a weapon on both ends of the floor.

Reco needs to put in some time in the weight room and work on his perimeter game, but he’s a tantalizing prospect and is one of the more highly touted prospects in recent VCU history. Coach Shaka Smart during one of his weekly broadcasts mentioned that Reco committed to VCU after visiting Georgia out of the SEC and Oklahoma out of the Big 12. The kid is a player and his above-the-rim athleticism should entertain Ram fans for years to come.

Rob Brandenberg was the first commitment in the Class of 2010 for Shaka Smart and the VCU Rams. He committed after exploding over the summer after being relatively unknown as a junior playing in the shadow of Rivals150 recruit Stevie Taylor at Gahanna Lincoln in Ohio. His play over the summer garnered him recognition from Rivals.com as the #11 overall prospect in the talent-rich state of Ohio. Several Division 1 offers followed including Butler and John Groce's Ohio Bobcats who recently knocked off Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament as a 14-seed. Brandenberg is a long and athletic 2-guard with a relatively large wingspan (6'7) to his height (6'2). He is one of the biggest risers on the Ohio hoops scene, coming from virtually nowhere as a JV player who burst onto the Varsity his junior year. He stars along with 2 other Division I prospects in Stevie Taylor and Anthony Jackson.

Rob Brandenberg played for a new AAU program called the Mustang Ballers unknown to most Coaches outside Columbus and as a result he was not exposed to many college coaches. All that changed when Brandenberg blew up at the Adidas Take 5ive Classic in Cincinnatti. His high school team Gahanna Lincoln runs the Princeton offense so it does not get to showcase his explosive athleticism as much, but on the AAU circuit, coaches got to see it first-hand, including one Shaka Smart. I will be the first to admit, I didn’t see the flash at first either, but my mind changed on Wednesday, July 8th at 2pm when he caught flame like a Columbus Wild Fire against Ricardo Johnson in the Silver Championship game. For 10 minutes I saw something that very few and far between witness and that was something we like to call in the business as “The Zone”.

He was slicing, dicing, cutting the opposition apart like a Billy Mays infomercial! He is blessed with the ability to blow by guys with a quick first step, he can create his own shot off the bounce and plays with a sudden burst and gear that most are not given at birth. He can keep you honest from 19 feet, but then hurt you if close out hard and gets to the rack and finishes above the rim in a half court set or transition. His High School team runs the Princeton style offense so you don’t get to see much off the bounce, but you see the fluidity in the break when he runs the lanes like a thoroughbred.

His name you ask? Rob, Rob Brandenberg.From where you wonder? Gahanna Lincoln High School.What year? He’s a 2010. What position? Scoring Guard. How tall? 6-foot-2.

His skillset is perfect for a full-court pressure system and his 6'7 wingspan will be an excellent asset in the VCU press. Here is ESPN's evaluation of Brandenberg prior to his blowing up over the summer:

May, 2009: This long and athletic guard plays with great energy. He sprints the lane in transition and can get to the rim and finish before the defense can set. Brandenberg does a good job of making scoring plays of the dribble in the half court and can finish with good touch and body control. He is also athletic enough to get the ball in the hole with some impressive athletic finishes. He is streaky but respectable from behind the arc and can finish above the rim off the vertical with a clear path. Brandenberg also puts forth excellent effort on the offensive glass. Brandenberg needs to add strength but has great upside and could be a player on the rise in the state of Ohio.

Brandenberg has had a solid senior season for Gahanna and though they were undefeated at 25-0, they were not getting much respect nationally since they had not played any big-time teams and were playing in shadow of Columbus Northland who not only shared the same city, but were ranked #1 in the entire country. The Northland Vikings were led by the #1 overall recruit in the 2010 class in Jared Sullinger (Ohio State commit) as well as JD Weatherspoon (Ohio State commit) and Trey Burke (Penn State). Northland had beaten such national powers as Oak Hill and Findlay Prep while Gahanna had played relatively lesser known opponents. When the 2 undefeateds met up in the regional finals, Gahanna was expected to be little more than horse fodder for the Vikings on their way to their second state championship in a row. Rob Brandenberg and Gahanna Lincoln had other ideas. Here is footage from the game (Brandenberg is #1):

Rob Brandenberg led all Gahanna scorers with 19 points as the Lions shocked the high school basketball world and thrashed the #1 team in the country by 26 points by a score of 71-45. Taylor, Brandenberg, and Jackson led Gahanna to a hot shooting night and ended the Vikings' season. Subsequently Brandenberg's team was named the #9 team in the nation by ESPN RISE. Brandenberg has had a stellar season and is a recruit that Shaka could just not pass on. His combination of speed, athleticism, and shooting touch make him a very intriguing prospect.

Toby Veal is an interesting example of how maintaining relationships with players you have recruited before pays off. Both VCU (when Anthony Grant's staff was around) and Shaka Smart (while he was an assistant at Clemson) recruited Veal when he was a highly-touted high school senior with offers to several major colleges. Veal chose to go to Colorado and play for former NBAer Jeff Bdzelik in the Big 12 conference. Upon coming there Veal did not get much playing time and was disappointed with the lack of burn he was getting. Toby also had a child back in Georgia which strained on him as he was across the country in Colorado. This led him to transfer to Northwest Florida State, a junior college in Niceville, Florida last year to be closer to his young family.

"I went to play for (Bzdelik) because he coached in the NBA for a long time," Veal said. "I wanted to see how that was, but it didn't work out too good. He said playing time relied on me. I just didn't understand why I wasn't playing because I did everything he told me to do."

Veal was named Newcomer of the Year in the Panhandle Conference in which the NWF State Raiders play. He helped lead the Raiders to a 5th place finish in the NJCAA national tournament. His exploits are all the more impressive considering he had been battling knee injuries for much of the conference season. He is quite explosive athletically and runs the floor well, throwing down dunks on the fast break with authority.

Veal is reportedly not a firm commitment as he is still being courted by at least one SEC school. Although Veal had verbally committed in January it appears his recruiting situation is still fluid. According to his junior college coach he will be visiting VCU this week and is expected to commit then. Veal will provide valuable experience with the departure of senior players TJ Gwynn and Kirill Pischallnikov as well as the likely early departure of Larry Sanders to the NBA draft. Veal's bulk and low post moves will be a welcome addition to this recruiting class.

Darrell (DJ) Haley- 7'0, 225 pound C (Palmdale High, California):

Darrell is a very intriguing 7-foot prospect with a great frame and athleticism for his size. The knock on him has been that he is still very mechanical in the post and raw offensively. His positives are that he has soft hands and runs the floor exceptionally well for a guy of his size, an attribute common to all the big men in this recruiting class. He is a highly intelligent young man, boasting a 4.0 GPA with aspirations of one day working as an engineer for NASA designing rockets that disintegrate in space to reduce space and atmospheric pollution. He is pursuing an engineering major at VCU in order to pursue this goal. His father played at California in the PAC-10 during the early 80's. Assistant Will Wade was recruiting Haley when he was at Harvard last year and continued to stay on him when he moved to VCU. While Haley is a stud in the classroom, he is no slouch on the court either, averaging a double-double (12 points, 10 boards, and 4 blocks per game) with impressive athleticism for a 7 footer. His greatest attribute is his speed getting up and down the floor for his size. He also has a decent elbow jumper and mid-range game. The video from Palmdale's Midnight Madness shows Haley (#33) displaying a variety of dunks and showing impressive elevation:

While he hasn't put it all together, it's easy to see why Haley might be a monster in-waiting with his combination of athleticism, size, and intelligence. Scout.com's Dave Telep agrees:

"It's kind of mind-boggling to think the guys out west missed on him," Telep said in an e-mail. "After all, he is [6-11¾], smart and has natural ability and talent. When I saw him last June I thought he might be a late bloomer."

Palmdale also had to forfeit several of their games due to playing with a 5th year senior who was not declared eligible, so although Palmdale's won-loss record is not especially impressive, it is mainly due to the use of the ineligible player. Haley was also nominated to the McDonald's All-American game out of Palmdale (as Rob Brandenberg was). ESPN's Joel Francisco states that rebounding and defense are his primary strengths at this point. Once his offensive game catches up to his defensive game, he should be at the very least a big body that can eat up space in the post in a big-deprived CAA, and at the most may follow the progression of another ESPN 78 recruit that we all know well enough; Larry Sanders.

ESPN.com's Joel Francisco describes Haley as "one of the more intriguing late-blooming bigs on the west coast.

"Darrell has a very nice frame with long arms and overall very good length. He isn't very bouncy, but he runs well and has solid instincts around the basket," Francisco added.

"At this stage his rebounding at both ends is his strength. He has soft hands and he knows how to pass out of double teams and he can knock down jumper's out to the elbow. Darrell has some intangibles (length and heart) that coaches look for in a big, and he plays with passion and plays hard."

Haley was offered by Iowa State and Colorado from the major conferences, Drake from the MVC and a plethora of Ivy Schools such as Penn and Harvard due to his academic background. By all accounts from the coaching staff, he is a polite and classy young man. Watching him develop over the next four years will be a treat to watch and his progression as a big man from year-to-year will be exciting as his skill-set and athleticism are rare for a player of his size at a school like VCU.

Juvonte Reddic is the latest commit in the Class of 2010. He's a true steal for Shaka Smart and staff. With offers on the table from Maryland, Oklahoma, and Mississippi, and visits to the latter 2 on tap, Reddic cancelled both visits and made his pledge to the Rams last weekend in Richmond. Juvonte plays on a stacked Quality Education team that boasts the #2 2011 prospect in the nation in Quincy Miller (who is being heavily pursued by Kentucky), as well as point guard Stargell Love (headed to Baylor).

Like a number of players in this class, Reddic is a late bloomer who until this spring only boasted offers from JMU and Oral Robers, although Georgetown had been involved with his recruitment earlier as well. Over the course of his senior season, his game expanded tremendously and his high major athleticism and shot-blocking had several major college coaches vying for his services. As with Haley, assistant Will Wade played a big role in the initial recruitment and Shaka developed a very strong relationship with him as well. Reddic's comfort with Shaka and the coaching staff was what made the Rams tough to beat, even despite the level of competition vying for his services. Dave Telep described him as 'one of the top uncommitted post men in the country':

Reddic, a late blooming big man, is athletic and has a motor. He was one of the top available post players in the country. Reddic cited the overall structure of the program as a selling point.

His game will remind many of current Ram Larry Sanders with his ability to run the floor, block shots, and rebound. He has a couple of highlight videos online and subsquent lengthy threads on major college conference message boards across the nation such as Georgetown and Maryland. His athleticism and motor has people buzzing and he was a very popular name in recruiting circles for teams looking for a big man with upside and athleticism.

With Juvonte's athleticism and quickness, SLAM magazine suggested that Reddic may be the next in the growing line of NBA prospects to come out of VCU after Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders. While he's nowhere close to either player at this point, his raw potential certainly puts him in a similar place as Larry was when he first came to VCU. Juvonte has more of a high major body than Larry did coming in, as Reddic is a solid 215 (while Larry was 200 soaking wet). His wingspan is not as large as Larry's but he is more explosive athletically. Here is an interview with Juvonte and Quincy Miller (#2 2011 prospect) to gauge his height as it is listed anywhere from 6'8 to 6'10. Here he is less than half an inch shorter than Miller, who is well-publicized as 6'10.

Reddic's commitment to the Rams had fans at Maryland and Georgetown non-plussed and back-pedaling after raving over Juvonte's game. He certainly looks like an impressive player and Brian Snow from Rivals.com agrees, stating that Juvonte Reddic will garner strong consideration for a Rivals150 spot after his impressive senior season:

At 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds, Reddic has the look of a high-major basketball player. He also has the game of one. Reddic is capable of hitting shots from the mid-range, has athleticism around the rim, and he knows how to rebound.

With that skill set schools like Maryland, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Virginia Commonwealth came calling and offered him a scholarship. While all four did a great job, according to Quality Education Coach Isaac Pitts, the Rams were especially impressive and gained Reddic’s commitment.

One reason why Reddic was still available is because of the fact that he burst onto the scene late. A classic late bloomer, Reddic had a great senior season, and now is scratching the surface of his potential.

On the strength of his senior year, Reddic will earn definite consideration for a Rivals150 ranking when they are updated after the season.

The future looks very bright for VCU basketball and Shaka Smart has left no doubt in anyone's mind that if there is one thing he definitely does well, it is recruiting. The fact that he is a first-year coach makes this haul all the more impressive. With this new influx of fresh, new, and exciting talent, and the experience and skill of a talented senior class led by Joey Rodriguez, 2010-2011 will be a very exciting season that will hopefully result in improvement of an already successful 25-win campaign so far this season.

2011 Combo Forward Kasey Wilson Commits to the Rams!

Monday was a great day for Coach Shaka Smart and the VCU basketball program as they secured a commitment from 6'6, 200 pound combo forward Kasey Wilson out of North Port, Florida. Wilson picked the Rams over the University of Ohio out of the MAC (We also beat them out for 2010 recruit and Ohio-native Rob Brandenberg. ESPN broke the report first and ESPN recruiting coordinator Reggie Rankin was impressed yet again with the job Coach Smart has done on the recruiting trail.

Rankin is very impressed by this land for head coach Shaka Smart and his staff.

"This is a terrific early get for VCU. After a tremendous fall and winter he is definitely a junior on the rise.

"His toughness and ability to play inside-out will be huge for the Rams. Plus he comes from a terrific AAU program (Florida Elite) so you know he's been well coached and he's a great student.

"Shaka and his staff hit a home run with this commitment," Rankin
concluded.

Wilson is a tough and gritty forward who has made leaps and strides every year. As a sophomore his game consisted of primarily back-to-the basket moves and layups. As a junior he is now regularly finishing above the rim and shoots around 2 3-pointers a game. He is ranked as a 3-star by Rivals, a 2-star by Scout, and graded an 89 on ESPN (#44 PF in 2011 class). SWFLHoops.com has him ranked as the #1 overall prospect in Southwest Florida and FloridaHoops.com has him ranked as the #15 overall prospect in Florida for the Class of 2011. He is Shaka's first recruit in the 2011 class and possibly the earliest commit in VCU basketball history.
